What repointing is
Repointing means removing damaged mortar from between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. The bricks themselves often last far longer than the mortar holding them together, so repointing is one of the most common masonry repairs on older Long Island homes.
Done properly, it restores the wall's weather resistance and keeps water from working its way behind the brick.
Signs it is time
Mortar that crumbles when scratched, joints that look recessed or hollow, gaps you can see light or daylight through, and loose bricks are all warning signs. Staining or dampness on interior walls can also point to failing joints.
Chimneys, front steps and garden walls are often the first places to show wear because they are exposed on several sides.
Why matching matters
Good repointing matches the color, texture and joint style of the existing mortar so the repair blends in. Mortar that is too hard for older brick can also cause the brick faces to crack over time.
