Spring: inspect after winter
Walk around your home after the snow melts. Look at steps, walkways, driveways, chimneys and garden walls for new cracks, flaking or loose brick. Winter often reveals problems that started small.
Clear debris from joints and make sure downspouts direct water away from masonry and slabs.
Summer and fall: prevent water problems
Water is the biggest enemy of masonry and concrete. Keep gutters clean, fix drainage that sends water onto walks or foundations, and consider sealing concrete before winter.
Trim plants and vines that trap moisture against brick walls.
Winter: go easy on salt
Heavy use of de-icing salt speeds up concrete damage. Use it sparingly and shovel promptly so snow does not melt and refreeze on the surface.
If you spot damage, calling a local masonry and concrete contractor early usually means a simpler repair.
